I'm a 64 year old martial artist who has been training for over 50 years. My peers rate me, but I don't rate them, which more or less sets the tone for what I've got to say about the martial arts and those who practice them.
I take on anybody to train, and nine times out of ten I'll make them better. I've trained a couple of champions in Muay Thai/kickboxing. I'm not a one-dimensional martial artist. In the 1970s, my gym in Earlham Street, London was legendary and it was there that I instituted a program of full-contact, anything-goes fighting that resembled MMA--but we were doing it in my gym from 1973-1981. After the gym closed, I trained horses professionally, as well as other athletes outside of the martial arts. I also researched sports science, including psychology, physiology, biomechanics, bioenergetics, as well as the martial arts of all descriptions around the world. My life has been devoted to the martial arts.
I've tended to keep a low profile, because what I've got to say isn't usually what people in the martial arts want to hear.
I'm currently teaching in Birmingham every Sunday, doing MMA-based training with a personal method that I've developed over the course of many years of research and practice. I also travel for seminars and teach private lessons, which cover not only MMA but also weapons. I have a long history of going against the grain and trying to move the martial arts forward.
Comments on this blog are restricted to people on my friends list. That means I have to friend you. If you want to join my friends list, then on your profile page include a martial arts description of yourself that identifies you. I want to know who I'm talking to, in martial arts terms. To get an idea of what I mean, you can click on the user profiles of some of the people I have friended and you'll see what I'm talking about. I don't care if you have a lot of experience or not, I just want an honest description.
